What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a talking-based therapy, recommended to help sufferers of anxiety, depression, and other mental and physical health issues manage their feelings, thoughts and behaviour.
The treatment is designed, not to remove the problems entirely, but to encourage a healthier way of thinking.
By talking things through and in a certain way, it can help to break down the overwhelming thoughts into smaller, more manageable chunks.
How it works
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is based on the concept that your thoughts, feelings, actions and physical sensations are all intrinsically linked.
Consider this example:
Thoughts: ‘I am hopeless, nobody likes me’
Feelings: Down, lonely, sad
Actions: Not going out, reclusive, binge eating
Physiology: Feeling tired a lot OR heart racing, not being able to sleep
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is intended to break people out of this vicious cycle of negativity.
As you can see, the cycle can quickly progress and become something that is overwhelming and all-consuming, taking over your body, mind and time.
