Choosing where to train as a counsellor, therapist or mental health professional is an important decision. Whether you are taking your first steps into counselling, developing towards professional therapeutic practice, or looking for therapeutic support yourself, the environment you choose matters.
At Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre (GCTC), we provide counselling skills training, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) training and therapeutic services for people at different stages of their personal and professional journeys.
Proudly based in Glasgow, we combine face-to-face opportunities with accessible online counselling training and online therapy, helping people connect with GCTC from across Scotland and beyond.
Who Are Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre?
Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre is a specialist training and therapy centre with a strong focus on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and counselling skills.
Our training is designed and delivered by experienced practitioners and trainers who understand that becoming an effective therapist involves much more than learning models and techniques.
Good therapeutic practice requires knowledge, interpersonal skills, self-awareness, ethical thinking, reflection and the ability to build meaningful therapeutic relationships.
For this reason, our training encourages students to develop both professional competence and their individual identity as practitioners.
Alongside training, our therapeutic services provide a space for people seeking psychological support, bringing the same commitment to thoughtful, evidence-based and person-centred practice.
Based in Glasgow, Accessible Wherever You Are
Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre is proudly based in Glasgow, providing a central home for our counselling and CBT training and therapeutic services.
However, being based in Glasgow does not mean you need to live in Glasgow to access GCTC.
We recognise that work, family commitments, location and travel can all influence how accessible training and therapy can be. That is why we provide opportunities to connect with GCTC online as well as in person.
Our online COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills allows students to develop counselling skills, self-awareness and interpersonal learning through live online teaching. This provides an accessible option for people across Scotland and further afield without the need to travel to Glasgow each week.
Alongside our training, online therapy provides another way to access GCTC from the comfort and privacy of your own space. Online sessions can offer greater flexibility for people who live outside Glasgow, have busy schedules or simply prefer to attend therapy remotely.
For those who prefer face-to-face connection, our Glasgow base continues to provide opportunities for in-person training and therapy.
Whether you join us in Glasgow or connect with us online, our focus remains the same: providing a professional, welcoming and thoughtful environment for learning, development and therapeutic support.
Beginning Your Counselling Journey
For many people, their journey at GCTC begins with the COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills.
The Certificate provides an introduction to counselling skills and offers students the opportunity to develop communication, listening, self-awareness and relationship-building skills.
People undertake counselling skills training for many different reasons. Some are considering a future career in counselling or psychotherapy, while others work in professions where understanding people and communicating effectively are central to their role.
Students may come from backgrounds including healthcare, education, social care, psychology, management, coaching, support work and the third sector.
Others simply want to understand themselves and other people more deeply.
Whatever brings someone into the classroom, counselling skills training can provide an important foundation for further personal and professional development.
With both online and in-person learning opportunities, students can choose a route that works alongside their existing commitments.
Developing as a CBT Practitioner
For those wishing to progress further, GCTC provides Diploma-level training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
CBT is one of the most widely researched psychological therapies and is used across a range of mental health and therapeutic settings.
However, learning CBT involves much more than understanding individual interventions.
Students need opportunities to learn how to assess difficulties, develop collaborative formulations, build effective therapeutic relationships, select appropriate interventions, evaluate progress and reflect critically on their own clinical practice.
Our training therefore brings together academic learning, practical skills development, clinical experience, supervision and reflective practice.
The aim is not simply to teach students about CBT.
It is to support them in learning how to think and work like CBT practitioners.
Learning Through Practice
One of the principles underpinning training at GCTC is that therapeutic skills need to be practised.
Students are encouraged to actively participate in their learning through skills practice, discussion, reflection, case material, experiential exercises and feedback.
This creates opportunities to take psychological ideas out of textbooks and explore how they actually work within therapeutic conversations.
Training also provides space to make mistakes, receive feedback, reflect and try again.
That process is an important part of professional development.
Therapists do not become effective practitioners because they never make mistakes. They develop through curiosity, reflection, feedback, supervision and continued learning.
Creating a Community of Learning
Training to work therapeutically can be challenging.
Students are learning psychological theory while simultaneously developing interpersonal skills, reflecting on themselves and beginning to understand the responsibility involved in working with other people’s emotional experiences.
We therefore believe that the culture surrounding training matters.
At GCTC, we aim to create learning environments that encourage curiosity, respectful challenge, openness, reflection and professional responsibility.
Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically and gradually develop confidence in their own professional judgement.
The aim is not to produce practitioners who simply repeat what they have been taught.
It is to support practitioners who can think, reflect, evaluate evidence and continue learning throughout their careers.
Connecting Research With Real Practice
Evidence-based practice is central to CBT.
At the same time, therapy happens between two people.
Effective training therefore needs to bring together research, psychological theory, clinical skill and the therapeutic relationship.
Throughout our programmes, students are encouraged to consider not only “What does the model say?”, but also:
How does this help me understand the person sitting in front of me?
That question helps bridge the gap between academic knowledge and meaningful therapeutic practice.
Therapy at Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre
GCTC is not only a place to learn about therapy. It is also a place where people can access therapeutic support.
Our therapy services provide opportunities for individuals to work with practitioners in a confidential and professional environment.
Therapy can be accessed in person in Glasgow or online, making psychological support available to people who may not live locally or who find online appointments more convenient.
CBT can help people understand the connections between their thoughts, emotions, behaviours and experiences, while developing practical strategies for creating meaningful change.
Most importantly, therapy is a collaborative process. Our focus is on creating a space where people can explore their experiences, develop greater understanding and work towards the changes that matter to them.
Different Ways to Connect With GCTC
People come to Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre for different reasons.
Some are beginning their first counselling course.
Some are working towards becoming CBT practitioners.
Some are looking for therapy.
And some simply want to understand more about the world of counselling, CBT and psychological wellbeing.
Our Glasgow base provides a home for our face-to-face community, while our online COSCA Certificate in Counselling Skills training and online therapy services allow that community to extend much further.
This combination of Glasgow-based and online services allows people to choose the way of accessing GCTC that works best for them.
More Than a Qualification
Qualifications matter.
They demonstrate learning, competence and progression towards professional goals.
But we believe therapeutic training should offer something more.
It should change how people listen.
It should encourage them to question assumptions.
It should develop their ability to understand different perspectives.
It should help them become more aware of themselves within relationships.
And ultimately, it should help them become safer, more thoughtful and more effective practitioners.
That is the kind of learning we want to create at Glasgow Cognitive Therapy Centre.
